Pleasure Point Sextet

Pleasure Point is a powerful and exciting group that plays a wide variety of styles, unique arrangements of hard-driving hard bop in the style of Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, Roy Hargrove and others, infectious Afro-Cuban and salsa rhythms, Latin jazz, lots of originals, straight-ahead swing, soulful blues and beautiful ballads .

The group was originally formed in 2003 when California-based pianist Steve Abrams visited Wellington, hooked up with his friends there, and did several concerts. It has been running in various guises since. The group was named after a famous surfing spot in Santa Cruz, California, just down the street from O’Neill’s Surf Shop headquarters. In 2010 the band was extended to a sextet to play at national jazz festivals. The band has played at Nelson, Tauranga, Coromandel, Wellington and The Organic River Festival in Horowhenua. It has recorded two live albums ‘Live at The Realm’ and ‘Rattledog!’.

Pleasure Point is co-led by the ubiquitous Greg Crayford on drums, second generation of the well-known Crayford jazz family and Steve Abrams. The hard-driving rhythm section also showcases Cuban-born percussionist, vocalist and dancer, Rafael Ferrer Noel, Patrick Bleakley on bass and features a stellar front line of James Tait-Jamieson, tenor saxophone and Lex French, trumpet.
